Overview: Quechua is the collective term for several ethnic groups in South America who speak a Quechua language, scattered in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. The Quechua are descendants of the once powerful Incan empire. At the time of the conquest, the Incans referred to their language as "runasimi", but the Spanish conquistadores named the language "quechua" and that name persists. The speakers of Quechua have only a slight sense of common identity, due in part to the fact that the various Quechua dialects are in some cases so different that no mutual understanding is possible.
