Overview: Brazil was established as a colony of Portugal in 1500 and remained under the influence of Portugal until 1815. Today, Brazil is a Federal Republic, the largest country in South America, and the only Portuguese speaking country in South America. Brazil is a multiethnic society, which means that it is home to people of many different ethnic backgrounds. As a result, to be Brazilian is more a statement of nationality than of ethnicity. The Brazilian Portuguese people cluster encompasses Brazilians, sometimes delineated as White, Mestico, or Mulato, but more often simply characterized as Brazilian.
