They are a subgroup within the larger Yanomami ethnic group of Brazil and can also be known as Crichana, Yanam, Jawaperi, Xirixana, Jawari, Xiriana, Shiriana, Xirianá, Yanomami-Ninam, Ninam, Casapare, Shiriana Casa, Jauaperi. They are an Indigenous people, in the Amazon people cluster of the Latin-Caribbean Americans affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Ethnoreligion. They primarily speak Ninam.
