They are an ethnolinguistic community of Mexico and can also be known as Chontal de la Sierra de Oaxaca; Tequistlatec; Chontal de Oaxaca, chontal de Oaxaca bajo, Tequistlatec, Chontal de la Sierra de Oaxaca, Highland Oaxaca Chontal, Sierra, Chontal de Oaxaca, Sierra; Highland Oaxaca Chontal; chontal de Oaxaca alto; chontal de Oaxaca bajo, chontal de Oaxaca alto, Tequistlatec, Chontal de la Sierra de Oaxaca. They are an Indigenous people, in the Maya people cluster of the Latin-Caribbean Americans affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Christianity - Folk Catholicism. They primarily speak Spanish.
