They are a historically significant and socially transformative community in India, primarily located in Maharashtra and neighboring states and can also be known as Mehta, Mehra, Dhegu Megu, Tara!, Mehar. They are an Indigenous people, in the Marathi-Konkani people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Buddhism - Folk. They primarily speak Marathi.
