The Jhora of India

The Jhora of India, numbering approximately 59,000 people, are Engaged yet Unreached. They are described as a community of Odisha and Bihar, also called Sonjhar, whose name derives from jhora, meaning straining, for their traditional practice of panning gold dust from riverbeds. Fishing was their other traditional occupation and can also be known as Sonjhara. They are an Indigenous people, with Jhora / Sonjhar as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Odia people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Odia.
