The Alavan of India, numbering approximately 10,000 people, are Unengaged and Unreached. They are described as an occupational caste of Tamil-speaking Hindus from southern Tamil Nadu traditionally engaged in salt-making, distributed across Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Chidambaranar and Ramanathapuram districts They are an Indigenous people, with Alavan as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Tamil people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Tamil.
