They are described as an Uttar Pradesh Rajput community tracing descent from the sage Gautam, divided into Chattri and Bhumihar branches, and traditionally landowning cultivators of wheat, jowar, and pulses They are an Indigenous people, with Rajput as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Rajput people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Folk Hinduism. They primarily speak Bhojpuri.
