Overview: Ethnologue classifies two Mazahua languages and nine Otomi languages as Otomian, tracing their origins to the Otomi civilization, one of several early advanced civilizations of Mesoamerica. The Otomi likely inhabited the central Mexican plains before the Aztecs arrived in the 7th century. Today they inhabit both the mountains and the valleys of the state of Hidalgo. Otomi religion is a mixture of Roman Catholicism with traditional practices.
